Roughly $35,000. I enjoy researching things like this, so here are some cars that you could buy instead of a reliable family sedan.

1. 2006 Mercedes SL65 AMG

I’m a huge fan of this car and have wanted one for years. I realize the cost of yearly ownership is more than the purchase price of a lot of cars as it’s overkill in every area. I remember reading about one running 11's in the quarter mile with the A/C and seat massagers on.

2. 2003 Dodge Viper SRT10

It’s probably the most ‘exotic’ vehicle you can get for Camry pricing, aside from a broken Ferrari.

3. 2009 Corvette Z06

Possibly the best track car for the money as well as the most reliable, and the modification possibilities are endless. This might be the only list where a 7.0L V8 ranks at the top in terms of fuel economy.

4. 2010 BMW M5

The most ‘practical’ of the bunch. I recommend buying at Carmax.

5. 2004 Porsche 911 Turbo S

It took me a few days to find one of these, and I agree, the 997 is much better looking.

Top Speed: 190 mph

6. 2013 Cadillac CTS-V

There are almost too many CTS-V’s available at a low price. We should buy them all.

A 911 Turbo S for 35k?

I drove a regular 2004 turbo a couple months ago and it was priced at 46k. The least expensive one on autotrader in the nation is 37k. With no pictures it might not even be real.

The Viper is likely more reliable than the Z06. It’s a well known open secret that LS7 fanboys don’t like to admit, but the LS7 is incredibly flawed. They have major valvetrain issues, and it’s a heads off repair.

The M5 is probably the least reliable of the group, and sadly, it seems like Carmax has figured that out and stopped carrying them.

I think the E60 gen may be getting too old for carmax. They usually only carry 10year old and newer

It’s getting up there, although the last few model years haven’t hit 10 yet. The only E60s I see on Carmax are NA I6s — far and away the most reliable of that gen.

Yeah they’re hard to find. I found the one pictured for 36 and it had the X50 package

Do you think that’s a better bet than the F10? Those are all I can find.

I think that the NA I6 in the E60 is pretty reliable - from what I hear, the turbo 6 is not. Not really sure about the rest of the car though.

I know a fair number of people that got F10 535's, or cars with that same turbo 6 (different from the E60), and none of them had any issues - but the caveat is that they were all lease cars and never went past 50k miles.

My tech nerd neighbor had a regular CTS coupe but he just bought a V to replace it.
